| Addiewell Prison - West Lothian |
|
|
On 20 June 2006, the Scottish Prison Service awarded a contract to
Addiewell Prison Limited (APL) to design, construct, manage and finance
HMP Addiewell, West Lothian.
This Public Private Partnership contract will provide the Scottish Prison Service
(SPS) with 700 prisoner places for a period of 25 years commencing from
around the end of 2008 when the prison will be ready to receive its first intake
of prisoners..
The prison is being built by Interserve Project Services Limited (IPSL) and will be
operated by Kalyx Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sodexho.
The location chosen for the new prison was a ‘brownfield’ site, one that had
previously been put to industrial use over many years. Much of the site had
been neglected and derelict for some 20 years. As the prison design requires a
minimum amount of land, it allows for most of the existing trees and
mounding to be retained. APL has carried out remediation of the site and has
undertaken to enhance landscaping in order to screen the site from outside and
to minimise the visual impact of the prison.
The building of a new prison provides employment opportunities for the local
community, both during the construction phase and after the prison opens. As
well as providing job opportunities, the prison will also require supplies and will
seek to use local suppliers wherever possible.
